Il giovane equipaggio di Turn the Tide on Plastic, guidato dalla skipper britannica Dee Caffari e con l’italiana Francesca Clapcich, ha incassato la ricompensa per la scommessa a est e ha ripreso la testa della Leg 8 della Volvo Ocean Race.
La barca portacolori del progetto Clean Seas delle Nazioni Unite aveva scelto di portarsi più a est rispetto agli avversari, nella lunga risalita della costa brasiliana, guadagnando strada verso nord e verso la linea del traguardo di Newport, negli USA, ora distante circa 4.000 miglia.

Dee Caffari e il navigatore di Turn the Tide on Plastic, il francese Nico Lunven, hanno puntato sull’est nella speranza di trovare aria più fresca che permettesse loro di prendere un margine sugli avversari.
E, quando si è entrati nel sesto giorno dell’ottava tappa, sembra che la scommessa abbia pagato, visto che il vantaggio sui secondi, i danesi/americani di Vestas 11th Hour Racing ha superato le 11 miglia al rilevamento delle posizioni delle 15.

Ciononostante, la navigazione non è stata semplice per Turn the Tide on Plastic che ha dovuto evitare, come hanno dovuto fare anche gli inseguitori, le grandi masse nuvolose dell’Atlantico meridionale che possono sempre rivelarsi fatali.
“Ormai siamo entrati in una zona in cui l’aria ci permette di lascare le scotte e prendere più velocità, ma purtroppo le nuvole a volte remano contro.” Ha spiegato Dee Caffari. “La scorsa notte abbiamo passato circa otto ore sotto una nuvola con il vento che continuava a saltare, e sotto la pioggia. Abbiamo fatto moltissimi cambi di vele e i ragazzi sono rimasti svegli praticamente tutto il tempo. Anche adesso che ci siamo lasciati alle spalle quelle nuvole mostruose, ne arrivano di nuove continuamente.

Alcune grandi, alcune piccole, ma tutte portano un salto di vento e alcune della pioggia. Abbiamo scelto una combinazione di vele che ci permette di avanzare bene quando c’è aria e di adattarci quando finiamo sotto l’ennesima nuvola. Ora dobbiamo cercare di rimanere veloci e nella direzione giusta. Facile a dirsi ma non a farsi quando le nuvole cercano di fermarti e gli altri potrebbero farsi sotto.”
A parte la massima concentrazione, l’umore a bordo di Turn the Tide on Plastic è ottimo. “Siamo davanti, è fantastico.” Ha detto con il solito entusiasmo la triestina Francesca Clapcich. “Stiamo facendo una bella tappa, dobbiamo solo andare avanti così ancora per due settimane!”

I battistrada non sono i soli a soffrire per la meteo instabile dovuta alle formazioni nuvolose. Con il vento che passa dai 10 ai 30 nodi in pochi minuti, anche gli inseguitori possono restare vittime della situazione. “C’è un sacco di aria calda nella zona in cui siamo, che crea molta energia.”
Ha spiegato il veterano inglese Rob Greenhalgh da bordo di MAPFRE, attualmente in sesta piazza. “Queste nuvole spuntano da tutte le parti e sono enormi. Speriamo che il peggio sia passato, le previsioni per le prossime 48 ore dicono che l’aria aumenterà e ci permetterà di navigare con angoli più veloci.”

Al rilevamento delle ore 15 italiane, MAPFRE aveva un distacco da Turn the Tide on Plastic di 48 miglia, ma era la barca più rapida della flotta con 16.2 nodi. “Non siamo messi male ma Turn the Tide sta avanzando bene, e continuerà a farlo.” Ha spiegato ancora Greenhalgh. “Speriamo che le cose cambino un po’ in modo da rifarci sotto.”
Contrariamente a quanto successo alla barca di Dee Caffari, Team Sun Hung Kai/Scallywag oggi ha pagato il prezzo dell’opzione estrema a ovest, accumulando un distacco di circa 50 miglia.
