- This new model features solid cold-molded construction, west system epox
The all-new Vicem 65 IPS Classic, the Turkish-built yacht with classic Down East lines, hasbeen on display at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show 2018 (October 31- November 4). The 65 IPS Classic is Vicem's 153rd hull, and brings to bear everything the shipyard has become world renowned for in its 28 yearhistory. This Vicem's the first in that size range to be fitted with the Volvo Penta IPS system.
The Vicem 65 IPS Classic is the latest offering from a brand that has distinguished itself from the very beginning for honoring the old traditions of both Turkish and American naval design, while infusing their creations with an amount of luxury and quality of fit and finish that remains unmatched in the classic yacht segment. That, coupled with a construction method that sets them ahead of the competition, is the reason why Vicem is so respected in the industry and desired among yachting enthusiasts.
TIMELESS CLASSIC ELEGANCE
The cockpit of the 65 IPS Classic has a large L-shaped sofa and a wet bar. The salon has an oversize L-shaped sofa to starboard and a large lounge chair, flanking an entertainment center, to port. The galley is up and forward to port, with lots of counter space for long-range cruising. The helm station to starboard has seats for two.
CREATING EXTRA INTERIOR VOLUME
The new 65 IPS classic can be built with three or four staterooms and three heads. Below, the master stateroom is midships and full beam, with a walkaround bed and a large ensuite head with shower (7'5'' feet of head-room). The VIP cabin is forward with a walkaround bed and en suite head and shower; the third stateroom with two berths is on the starboard side, also with a head and shower. The 65 IPS Classic on display at FLIBS 2018 was a four cabin version and has an average of 7 feet of headroom.
The exquisite wood work in the interiors is complimented by the latest in equipment and electronics, and a design that focuses on open spaces, storage aplenty and absolute comfort. Sinan Unal - Vicem's Chief Naval Architect and Marine Engineer - says: "Our fully custom construction process allows us to build a yacht that is not hampered by the constraints of a molded hull, therefore, it was our goal to build a 65 footer with the internal volume of a typical 75 to 80 ft express cruiser. Vicem has always offered increased living space compared to the competition, but we made it a point to go beyond even our own standards. One thing that invariably leads to discomfort on a boat is headroom. Even with a wide beam and lots of windows, if the ceiling is just a few inches above the head, people will start feeling claustrophobic very soon. On this yacht, we have 7 ft of headroom average throughout, with the course, with all that additional volume come more closets and storage everywhere. We challenged our engineers to achieve this unrivaled space without altering the classic proportions of our exterior, so this yacht's look is classic Vicem, sleek, elegant and uncluttered".
Powered by twin 800-hp Volvo Pentadiesels with IPS 1050 pod drives, the new Vicem 65 IPS Classic cruises at 23 knots – with a range of about 420 nm - and tops out at 26 knots. Furthermore, the yard offers two other Volvo Penta engine options: 2xIPS 1200 or 2xIPS 1350.
THE COLD MOLDED METHOD
The building technique used to create the Vicem 65 IPS Classic is the cold molded process, west system epoxy. A millenary, unique construction technique which embodies all the construction methods of the Turkish historical marine tradition; the cold molded process west system epoxy a modern procedure different from traditional boat building.
Based on engineered wood construction,cold-molding uses laminated mahogany (coming from managed forests) and a specific formulated epoxy resin to create the hull, decks and principal superstructures. On a strength-to-weight ratio, mahogany is stronger than fiberglass.
Noelle Semmes, sales director of Vicem Yachts USA, refers: "Vicem's proprietary construction produces a hull that mixes the best of synthetic materials and natural ones in a completely hand made way, which ensures utmost quality throughout. Like all high end brands, we use high tech fibers like e-glass and carbon fiber to reinforce all stress points and encapsulate the inner and outer layers of the hull, but inside the hull itself, instead of more fiberglass or foam like production boats, we use a mahogany and epoxy laminate that is far superior. Why use wood as the inner layer? Because it is much better. On a weigh-to-strength ratio, mahogany is much stronger than fiberglass, while drastically reducing sound and temperature levels. And because this construction uses a lot less epoxy, our hull is much lighter and not as stiff as a fiberglass one, which means we do not pound and rebound over the waves but rather, glide right through them. If you've never been out on a Vicem, you are in for the revelation of your life. A much gentler ride, on a hull that is virtually silent and much cooler in summer, or warmer in winter, than a plastic fiberglass boat. And of course, because of the reduced weight and better sea keeping, we need smaller engines, which results in better fuel consumption".
