Discriminating sailors desire a perfect combination of new and old, they wish to find boats that are better than their rivals in build, quality, and timeless in appearance.
Meeting with the wishes of this particular client, Zurn Yacht Design launches two different ways to enjoy the sea following the “bespoke” New England style, for Christmas 2017.
MARBLEHEAD 22
Zurn Yacht Design presents the high performance Marblehead 22, epoxy built. This model bears the classic lines and charm of a traditional wooden boat, without the upkeep.
Above the waterline, the Marblehead 22 appears as a true classic: a narrow beamed hull accented by a nearly plumb stem, sweeping sheer, counter transom, and varnished coaming boards. Below the water she’s all performance. A fine entry gracefully transitions to a powerful mid-section that finishes with just enough rocker to bring the sea peacefully back together.
The low center of gravity and efficient lift of the bulb keel combined with the balanced spade rudder contribute to the Marblehead 22’s ability to effortlessly climb to weather. The weather deck is open and uncluttered, featuring wide flat surfaces around the cockpit to comfortably accommodate several crew-members.
Control lines from the North™ mainsail are all led to the middle of the cockpit where either the helmsman or crew can adjust the mainsheet, cunningham or outhaul (a.k.a. “snotter” to wishboom traditionalists).
The 45-pound Hall Spars™ carbon-fiber un-stayed rig is designed to work in unison with the sail to provide power in light air, while bending off to open the leach and reduce power and heeling force in the gusts, keeping the boat at an optimal heel angle for a smooth, comfortable, fast sailing experience.
The 11’ 9” of usable cockpit space is nestled between lockers aft and a small cuddy forward used for stowing gear. Speed, stability, “easibility”, and charming looks combine to ensure hours of pleasure on the water whether single-handing or sailing with a crowd.
SAMOSET 30
Classic ideas in contemporary design: it’s a concept that has been at the core of Zurn Yacht Design from the very beginning. So when the crew at Samoset Boatworks of Boothbay, Maine set out to build a powerboat that fused traditional good looks with modern design and performance, they turned to Zurn Yacht Design to find the perfect balance between past and present.
The end result is the Samoset 30, an elegant handcrafted center console runabout glowing with fine woodwork and offering comparable performance with other boats in her market segment.
The Samoset 30 is built in cold molded fashion, featuring red cedar and mahogany, sheathed in a composite outer layer and sealed with West System epoxy. This construction approach yields an impressively strong structure, and the Samoset’s moderate displacement makes for a very seaworthy, yet nimble, 30 footer.
The layout is clean and straightforward, with ample seating, T-Top and Dodger providing protection from sun and wind. Several noteworthy features include refrigerated storage, a powered retractable electronics dashboard, and access panels for daily engine inspections. A well-equipped day head features a Vacuflush plumbed toilet system and a vanity with faucet.
Of course, all is finished in warm varnished teak.
Powered by a single efficient Yanmar 440 horsepower diesel engine, the Samoset 30 tops out at a very respectable 35 knots, while offering a comfortable cruise in the mid 20-knot range. With a deep seaworthy vee hull, beginning with an aggressive 70° entry and tapering to a moderate 18° of deadrise aft, the Samoset is a capable performer in both calm and unruly waters.
An optional Hamilton waterjet drive eliminates underwater appendages and provides some peace of mind when cruising among lobster pots.
From the protected coves of Maine’s Downeast coastline to the unpredictable rips off Block Island’s shores, this modern-day classic feels right at home.
