Headquartered mid-coast on Somes Sound on the island of Mount Desert, Maine is John Williams Boat Company. John “Jock” Williams founded and built his business providing the commercial fisherman of Downeast Maine with safe and seaworthy platform on which to work 12 hour days fishing the rich coastal waterways. Over the last dozen years or so, Jock has moved the focus of his business into the pleasure boat market, finishing off his commercial lobster boat hulls to owners individual request with nothing but the finest woods, materials, and furnishings.
Jock and Doug Zurn first met 25 years ago on a delivery from City Island, New York, to his boat yard in Maine, aboard the Philip Rhodes designed CAPER. Both have enjoyed each other’s company on several occasions and discussed the possibility of someday collaborating on a design/build. Hence the culmination in the William 38.
KEY TECHNICAL FACTS
A true “wolf in sheep’s clothing”, this boat promises to leave other Downeast built lobster conversions in her wake with the adaption to a planning hull form. With lobster boat appearance above the chine, the hull below turns a corner and boasts an 18-degree dead-rise. Hull construction consists of a vinyl-ester resin, stitched e-glass, and Corecell cored construction, providing a higher strength and more water resistant hull than conventional solid polyester, woven roving construction.
Propulsion is provided by Volvo’s patented IPS system with twin IPS 600 diesels. With this power plant, all exhaust exits underwater, engines are soft mounted, and the pod drives are mounted in a solid fiberglass collar; the combination provides the quietest propulsion package available in the production engine market. As for “wolf in sheep’s clothing”: top speeds of 40 knots with cruising speeds in the low 30’s while burning an estimated 28 GPH with a 300+ mile range, make this boat very unique combined with her Downeast outward appearance.
The deck is molded FRP construction. Finishes are owner driven with such elaborate treatment as varnished teak veneers, or kept simple and low maintenance with white gelcoat. The Pilothouse includes a large settee/engine hatch amidships with L-shape settee to port. The Helm Station forward to starboard, and movable teak benches finish out the aft Cockpit.
KEY DESIGN FACTS
Interiors are highly custom, but in this instance it’s an open concept layout. There is a generous galley to port with cold plate refrigeration, three burner propane stove/oven, sink, and ample storage. To starboard is a head with separate shower.
Both areas are serviced with hot and cold running fresh water. Forward is open to seating, locker, a dresser, and v-berth sleeping accommodations. The full interior is finished in beautiful Herreshoff style with white bulkhead panels, varnished mahogany trim, and cherry ceilings.
