The French sailor Armel Tripon has today won the Multi50 division in the four-yearly solo Route du Rhum-Destination Guadeloupe transatlantic sailing race.
Tripon at the helm of the trimaran Réauté Chocolat, crossed the finish line at 16:32:40 local time (21:32:40CET) in a time of 11 days, 7 hours 32 minutes and 40 seconds for the 3,542-nautical mile course. His elapsed time means he narrowly misses the course record for the Multi50 division by two hours and 19 minutes, the winning mark set in 2014 by Erwan Le Roux (FênetreA-Mix Buffet).
A total of 123 sailors started the race on November 4 off Saint Malo in Brittany. Tripon is the third to finish it after the two ULTIME skippers, Francis Joyon and François Gabart, with this being his first major win in the 50 foot trimaran class.
